NUR 107INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING: CONCEPTS
FOR TRANSITIONING TO PRACTICE.................................................3-2-3 This course introduces the licensed practical nurse (LPN) to the concepts of professional nursing practice building on previous knowledge and practice as the LPN transitions to the registered nurse role. The student identifies the wellness needs of the individual and community using clinical reasoning and judgement with integration of the nursing process needed for transitioning to the role of the registered nurse. Emphasis is placed on development of skills necessary for safe, client centered care that will prepare the student for success in the Nursing Program's curriculum. This course introduces the student to concepts of nursing providing the foundation for professional nursing practice and the framework for the nursing program. The concepts of nursing reflect safe, client-centered care, which are met through teamwork and collaboration among health care disciplines. Emphasis is placed on understanding the concepts of nursing applied to professional nursing practice. This is a non-clinical course. Prerequisites: Final High School transcript with graduation date or equivalent on file at the College OPTION 1: TEAS Reading Comprehension score of 75% or higher, TEAS Total Composite score of 75% or higher, AND placement into or completion of BIO 131 - Anatomy and Physiology I with a minimum grade of C, with ALL requirements completed within 5 years; or OPTION 2: TEAS Reading Comprehension score of 75% or higher, TEAS Total Composite score of 65% to 74%, AND BIO 131 - Anatomy and Physiology I or BIO 132 - Anatomy and Physiology II or BIO 140 - Microbiology with a minimum grade of B, with ALL requirements completed within 5 years. NUR 210HOLISTIC HEALTH: COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE
HEALTH PRACTICES........................................................................... This course will explore the use of complementary and alternative health practices within a holistic framework of care. A spirit of inquiry will be encouraged through sharing of knowledge, demonstration and exploration of selected health practices such as herbal remedies, homeopathy, healing touch therapies, chiropractic and Eastern therapies. Use of complementary and alternative health practices will be evaluated in the context of managing health conditions such as pain, weight, addictions, and gender specific issues. This course will examine use of complementary and alternative health practices in terms of safety, effectiveness and integration into one's own lifestyle and working with others.
CLIENT ACROSS THE LIFESPAN EXPERIENCING LIFE-THREATENING HEALTH CARE NEEDS HONORS..................................................... 6-2-12 Building upon integrated concepts of nursing, this course focuses on applying and utilizing the concepts of nursing when caring for the client experiencing life-threatening situations. The student identifies urgent health care needs of the client across the lifespan using clinical reasoning and judgement with integration of the nursing process. Emphasis is placed on increasing independence with application of nursing skills in providing care for the client with urgent health care needs in varied health care settings. This Honors course fosters high-achieving students' growth towards the learning outcomes by improving critical thinking, becoming proficient at laboratory skills, and prioritization of patient care. This course a stepping stone to bridge the knowledge gap between classroom activities and real- life bedside nursing while implementing best practices. This course is subject to a course fee. NUR 218TRANSITION TO PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE3
Building upon integrated concepts of nursing, this course focuses on applying and utilizing skills needed to prepare the student for transition to professional nursing practice. Students will demonstrate ongoing independence in skills, Decision-making and problem-solving in a structured, controlled environment. Emphasis will be placed on working in a collaborative team setting, demonstration of professional communication and application of professional standards in the management of client centered care.
