SSC 101Science Education Outreach: FSP (General Science)

Variable (0 - 1) Credit(s) In this course, students wil engage in hands-on learning and reflection. Students wil effectively connect theory to practice and use those skills to demonstrate science experiments in K-12 classrooms. Students will learn to acquire expertise by building a lesson plan of their choice using the scientific method, working closely with a faculty advisor, a K-12 teacher, and finally, receiving an evaluation at the end of the semester. Clearances and travel to local schools within Westmoreland County is required.

SSC 150Global Study in Science and Society (General Science)3

Credit(s) Exploration of the integral role of science in society through a global lens. Specific focus will vary based on location and/or instructor but may include the scientific basis of a region’s cultural traditions or the impact of climate change on infrastructure and access to food and clean water. This course was developed via a UISFL grant and supports either certificate in African or Latin American area studies when offered in a complementary locale.

SSC 260Science and the National Parks (General Science)3

Credit(s) This course provides the opportunity to explore and learn about scientific principles and methods through an immersive experience in the U.S. National Park System and adjacent areas. The course uses variations in regional geography, landscape, natural resources, and ecology as the basis for scientific exploration. Students will become familiar with fundamental scientific principles, interpretation and evaluation of scientific data, the role of science in environmental sustainability and how science can be used to solve problems.
