DASC 100Introduction to Data Science3
This course offers a non-technical introduction to data science. Students will be introduced to the development, fundamental tools, and the impact of data science in a wide range of disciplines such as business, engineering, health, and the sciences. Fundamental data visualization techniques and basic concepts of machine learning will be applied through real-life data science projects.
This course examines ethical questions and implications that arise from collecting, drawing inferences from, and acting on data, particularly when these activities are automated by Artificial intelligence. Topics include assessing ethical issues, privacy, confidentiality, consent for data collection and analysis, and defining research and responsibilities associated with conducting ethical research
This course offers the UNIX concepts, commands, and utilities, organization of the UNIX file system, and fundamentals of cloud computing. The students will be introduced to creating and managing UNIX processes, threads, and deploying and managing applications on cloud platforms. Implementing algorithms using shell scripts, client-server programming, and inter-process communication will be applied through real-life data science projects.
This course initiates the two-part capstone sequence where students apply their cumulative knowledge to real-world projects. Emphasizing project planning, research, and design, students collaborate to solve real-world problems. Deliverables include a project proposal, feasibility study, and a working prototype, preparing for implementation in DASC 499, Senior Project 2.
Building on the foundation from DASC 498 Senior Project I students complete their projects, focusing on implementation, testing, and refinement. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, collaboration, and project management. The course culminates in a final presentation and project demonstration, showcasing a fully functional solution developed over both semesters.
