This course explores critical questions of sustenance, which are often overlooked in ''sustainability'' discourse: How do people sustain themselves in North America? Against what pressures? How does the geography and history of the land shape cultural, social, political, and economic practices of sustenance? And, in contexts of oppression, dispossession, and discrimination, how do acts of sustenance intersect or conflict with larger cultural, social, economic, and political debates about ''sustainability''?

GEOG 297Agroecology and Ecoliteracy3

This course integrates agricultural, ecological, and design principles to enhance environmental health. In it we focus on three primary things: We study the histories and methods of a diverse range of agricultural practices--from wild gardening and permaculture to high intensity crop production. We also develop increased familiarity, or "literacy," with natural systems including water ways, plant and forest systems, and their interconnectedness in the natural world. Third, through a semester-long creative project, we learn practical design skills for applying agroecological solutions to improve environmental health and resilience in our local context.

GEOG 443River Ecosystem Processes3

Rivers and streams are not simply passive transporters of terrestrial products, but dynamic, three-dimensional systems that transform and transport, thereby sustaining myriad ecosystem functions and services. The abiotic and biotic components of rivers interact across landscapes via delivery from watersheds, exchange between surface and groundwater, the movement of biota, nutrients, gases, and heat, and other components. Thus, the study of rivers necessitates considering their 3-dimensional connections across landscapes. This course will introduce stream, river, and floodplain: (1) hydrology and geomorphology; (2) fundamental biogeochemistry and measurement techniques; (3) ecology including food webs and community assemblages across landscapes.

GEOG 586Scaling Up Geospatial Analysis3

This course provides a conceptual and applied introduction to taking geospatial analyses beyond the desktop when data and workloads grow. This course introduces the core ideas for scaling up spatial analysis: data storage architectures, spatial indexing and partitioning, and distributed execution on local, cluster, and cloud platforms. Using a diverse set of open-access datasets, students will learn the fundamentals of working with "large" and "big" data and extend familiar geospatial analysis techniques from desktop software to more scalable environments.
