YDSH 401Elementary Yiddish I3
Yiddish 401 introduces students to the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing - in rich cultural context. Using In eynem: The New Yiddish Textbook (Vol. I) as the primary text, plus selected materials from College Yiddish (Weinreich) for reference and drills, students will gain command of the alef-beys (ABC), core grammar (present tense verbs, noun gender and case in basic contexts), and an expanding everyday vocabulary. Class time emphasizes communicative practice, pair/group activities, and cultural media (songs, short dialogues, images).

YDSH 402Elementary Yiddish II3
Continuation of YDSH 401. We complete In eynem Vol. I and begin early units of Vol. II, consolidating core grammar (cases in frequent contexts, common verb patterns including separable verbs and verbs of motion, modal verbs) and expanding vocabulary domains (weather, clothing, travel, health, home & city). We read short literary and cultural texts (songs, proverbs, micro stories) and practice sustained conversation and short narration.
