EAP 015Listening & Speaking I3

This elective course aims at helping multilingual students develop skills of active listening and oral communication in social and academic settings. The course is designed for students with intermediate English proficiency. It utilizes a combination of face-to- face instruction and an online interactive listening and speaking program, which significantly increases learning gain. To foster active listening skills, students will be exposed to news broadcasts, videos, and college lectures. Students will also receive intensive practice in developing academic skills such as inferencing, interpreting, synthesizing, categorizing, note taking, and critical thinking. To foster speaking skills, students will improve accuracy and fluency in pronunciation and develop strategies of effective communication. During the course, students will produce several presentations which will be audio and video recorded and provided with instructor’s feedback.

EAP 018Intensive Academic English6

Intensive Academic English aims to help multilingual students become accustomed to academic English. The course utilizes an integrated skills approach which provides intensive practice in reading and writing. Students will develop foundational academic English skills required for their eventual transition to college-level general education classes.

EAP 020Reading I3

EAP 020 Reading helps multilingual students become more strategic and proficient in reading academic English. The course provides instruction and comprehensive support based on TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes) pedagogies. EAP 020 is the first of two reading courses which emphasize the development of skillful reading strategies in the context of college studies.

This is the first course in a three-level sequence of writing courses for multilingual students. This course will introduce students to the basics of composition and help them develop personalized writing strategies. In addition, students will improve their use of English by working in a web-based English language learning program.

This is the second course in a three-level sequence of writing courses for multilingual students. Students will build skills and strategies of essay planning, composing, and revising through hands-on drafting and collaborative activities as well as through guided writing practice supported with detailed feedback from the instructor. In addition, students will improve their use of grammar through explicit instruction and assessment of selected concepts.

EAP 050 Writing II aims to help multilingual students become more confident and proficient in writing in academic English. EAP 050 is the third in a three-level sequence of writing courses designed to prepare students for the college-level writing they will do in their future courses. Students will practice skills and strategies of academic writing, including composing and revising through guided writing practice, supported by collaborative activities and detailed feedback from the instructor. Students will also be introduced to the basics of integrating research in their own writing, as well as contextualized grammatical concepts that will help them critique and improve their English expression.

EAP 060Reading II3

EAP 060 Reading II supports multilingual students as they develop the confidence and proficiency to read English in the context of college studies. EAP 060 is the third in a three-level sequence of courses designed to prepare students for the demands of reading in college. Students will practice skills of active and strategic reading as well as develop methods for coping with unfamiliar vocabulary. Additionally, students will practice critical thinking through textual analysis and written response.
