PSG 100Medical Terminology for Polysomnography2
This course is designed to introduce students to medical terminology with a focus on sleep medicine and polysomnography. Emphasis is placed on understanding word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and abbreviations commonly used in sleep diagnostics and related fields. Topics include terminology related to sleep physiology, sleep disorders, neuroanatomy, respiratory function, cardiovascular implications of sleep disorders, polysomnographic procedures, diagnostic testing, scoring terminology, pharmacology relevant to sleep medicine, and patient care documentation. By the end of the course, students will be able to accurately interpret and utilize medical terminology in the clinical sleep lab setting.
PSG 101Cardiopulmonary Structure and Function for Clinical Practice2
This course provides a focused exploration of cardiopulmonary function as it relates to polysomnography and sleep medicine. Students will learn about the structure and function of the heart and lungs, gas exchange, ventilation, and circulation, with an emphasis on their role in sleep-disordered breathing. The course covers common respiratory and cardiac conditions affecting sleep, including obstructive and central sleep apnea, hypoxia, hypercapnia, and heart rate variability. Students will gain hands-on experience analyzing polysomnographic data, interpreting electrocardiograms (ECG), and applying oxygen therapy and positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment strategies. Emphasis is placed on clinical assessment techniques, emergency response protocols, and adherence to industry standards to ensure patient safety in sleep studies.
This course introduces the fundamentals of polysomnography, focusing on sleep physiology, sleep disorders, and the role of a sleep technician. Students will develop foundational knowledge necessary for conducting sleep studies and understanding sleep-related pathologies.
PSG 103Polysomnographic Instrumentation and Data Acquisition2
This course focuses on the technical aspects of polysomnographic instrumentation, data acquisition, and patient preparation. Students will gain practical experience in operating polysomnographic equipment and troubleshooting common issues.
PSG 104Scoring, Analysis, and Reporting in Polysomnography2
This course covers the principles of scoring sleep studies in the adult and pediatric populations, analyzing polysomnographic data, and generating reports for diagnostic and therapeutic decision making. Students will learn to interpret sleep patterns, identify abnormalities, and communicate findings effectively.
This internship course provides polysomnography students with a comprehensive, hands-on clinical experience in a professional sleep study environment. Under the direct supervision of a qualified preceptor, students will apply theoretical knowledge to real-world polysomnographic procedures, gaining proficiency in patient care, sleep study protocols, data collection, and analysis. The course emphasizes professional standards, patient safety, teamwork, ethical responsibilities, and critical thinking skills essential for success in the field. Throughout the 960-hour supervised internship, students are also required to complete 90 hours of concurrent classroom instruction designed to reinforce technical skills, enhance professional development, and prepare for certification. Upon completion, students will have gained the competencies necessary for entry-level practice in polysomnography and eligibility for professional certification exams.
