BHSX 201:Foundations in Behav Hlth Serv
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the foundations of behavioral health services. Students will examine the historical development of the field, explore the organization, financing, and delivery of services in the United States, and discuss the integration of behavioral health with primary care and other health services. The course also will cover challenges and opportunities in the field, including career opportunities. Additionally, students will apply ethical principles and professional standards to realistic scenarios and analyze future trends in behavioral health services.
This course covers the various behavioral health services and programs for adults, children, and youth, and the roles that practitioners perform. Promotion, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation services to the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, learning disabled, and substance abuse populations will be surveyed. The historical context of services and how the mentally ill have been historically stigmatized and conceptualized will be reviewed, so that students will be able to develop critical thinking about mental health services. Contemporary policy issues, legislation, ethical issues, controversies, social movements, and trends affecting services to those with mental illness and mental disorders will be discussed.
Provides an overview of the human service agency from management and leadership perspectives. Management topics include exploring opportunities for career advancement in human services, transitioning from service provider to manager, exploring theories of organization, strategic planning, assessing community needs, marketing, writing grant proposals, developing human resources, managing finances, designing and using information systems, and evaluating human service programs. Leadership topics include leadership theories, leading and changing human service organizations, and the learning organization.
This course introduces research design, data acquisition, and data analysis, and covers quantitative and qualitative research methods. Focuses on developing students’ skills in interpreting research studies in a critical manner to inform evidence-based practice and to begin original research.
This capstone course empowers students to design and develop a program or business aimed at addressing the behavioral health needs of a specific population. Students will identify a relevant behavioral health problem, conduct consumer research, and create intervention and communication strategies. The program students develop will align with future career goals in the behavioral health services field, providing hands-on experience in strategic planning, program design, implementation, and evaluation.
This course serves as a capstone course in the Behavioral and Health Services program. Students complete the SCPS Portfolio they have been assembling throughout their program. The portfolio provides students with an opportunity to look at the past, present, and future. Students reflect on personal growth and development during their program of study. Students apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their courses to a specific problem or issue. The portfolio concludes with a professional development plan wherein students identify goals for continued professional growth and lifelong learning.
