IN 500:Foundations in Intgr Nutrition
This course will explore the current evidence for topics in nutrition, including the role of various nutrients for proper biological function and regulation, common health consequences resulting from imbalances in macronutrients (protein, fat, carbohydrates) and micronutrients (fat versus water soluble vitamins), the effects that different dietary and environmental exposures can have on altering the gut microbiome, and the implications of these factors on overall health. It will also introduce the concept of interconnectedness of different body systems and the role of assessing symptomatic and functional markers of nutritional imbalance. Competency with this material will be demonstrated by, in part, analyzing realistic case study examples that formulate nutritional care plans and/or nutritional recommendations that are designed to optimize health.
This course provides information and guidance to safely and effectively apply nutritional support to patients in need from illness, injury, and in conditions of deficiency. Past and current utilization of nutritional care in medicine and the history of observation, research, and application into the present time will be introduced. This course covers the critical role of nutrition in inflammation and repair, as necessary to maintain homeostasis and an overview of several types of clinical dietary programs and related benefits. The application of Integrative Nutritional assessment and support, in combination with a variety of health disciplines and how this complementary adjunct can improve patient outcomes, are important components in this course. Participants will gain an understanding of the classes of products commonly used in Advanced Clinical Nutrition by physicians and experienced health care providers.
This course will explore precision nutrition, metabolism, homeostasis, and biological crosstalk between organ systems. Specific emphasis will be placed on dietary influences at a molecular and biochemical level exploring the interrelationship of nutrients, metabolic and detoxification pathways, health, and common diseases (e.g., cardiometabolic disease, hypogonadism, obesity, cognitive dysfunction/decline, cancer, and accelerated aging).
