This course introduces the introductory concepts of sports management. Topics covered include administrative philosophy, sport governance, diversity issues, marketing, licensing, communications, budget and finance, legal issues and sports economics. Analysis of current and future trends in sports management will also be addressed.
The first of two sports management practicums to enhance professional development and career readiness, each student will be required to spend approximately 4 hours per week (60 hours total) in the assigned experiential learning opportunity. The specific duties will be determined by student needs and abilities in cooperation with the supervising faculty. SMGT 201 and SMGT 202 will be taken in concurrent semesters. Students will be responsible for providing their own transportation.

SMGT 202Practicum II2

Sports analytics introduces students to the fundamental concepts of statistics with a focus on applications in sports management and analysis. Students will explore statistical techniques used in evaluating team and player performance, decision-making, sports analytics, and fan engagement strategies. Real-world sports scenarios will be emphasized to connect statistical methods with practical applications.
A study of the process by which sports products, services, and/or events are brought to the sport consumer which includes a thorough investigation of the unique nature of the sport industry and sport marketing. Class discussions will include those based on market research and analytics, market segmentation and target marketing, promotion, sponsorship and the role of activation, as well as the delivery and distribution of core products and extensions. Students will also get hands-on experience creating and presenting a marketing plan to a professional sports team.
This course examines the social institution of sport through both cultural and structural lenses. Topics covered include: socialization through sport; race, social class, gender and ability construction through sport; sports, media, and mass consumption; the socio-economics of sport; and social change through sport.

SMGT 335Sports Event Planning and Management4
A study of the principles involved in successful sports/event planning and management including facility operations, risk management, stakeholder management, accounting and financial planning, planning and designing the environment, sponsorships, promotion and atmospherics. Analysis of current and future trends in sports management will also be addressed.
A study of law as it pertains to the sport industry. Legal principles pertaining to a variety of topics including risk management, contracts, antitrust law and intellectual property will be presented and applied to sports organizations. Text, class discussions and case studies will emphasize legal reasoning processes.
The capstone course, Research Methods in Sport, equips students with the tools to design, conduct, and evaluate research specifically within the sports industry. Emphasizing both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, students will explore topics such as sports analytics, fan engagement, marketing research, performance metrics, and organizational studies. The course culminates in a capstone research project where students identify and address a pressing issue in the sports domain.
