CRCJ 360Ballistics and Shooting Investigations - This course provides

an intensive exploration of forensic techniques used in the investigation and reconstruction of shooting incidents. Students will examine the principles of internal, external, and terminal ballistics; analyze firearm and ammunition components; and apply methods for testing and interpreting ballistic evidence. Emphasis is placed on bullet trajectory analysis, wound ballistics, bullet hole characteristics, and bloodstain pattern interpretation. Through mock crime scenes and hands-on exercises, students will develop proficiency in documenting and reconstructing shooting events. A field experience at a local indoor firearms range will expose students to ballistic variation across firearm types, enhancing their understanding of real-world investigative challenges. Drawing extensively from Vernon Geberth’s Practical Homicide Investigation, students will learn to apply professional standards and protocols in the analysis of death scenes. Emphasis will be placed on distinguishing unequivocal from equivocal deaths, determining cause and manner of death, and understanding the role of behavioral analysis and victimology in investigative deduction.
