MATH 175Mathematics of Cryptography: An Introduction3

Every day, 143,000 terabytes of data are transferred across the internet, including financial transactions, medical records, and sensitive client data. Half of this traffic is secured through encryption, relying on mathematical algorithms such as the RSA to encode the data in a way that only the recipient can decode. In this class, we will see how cryptography works first-hand. We will start with classical ciphers (Atbash and Caesar ciphers) and develop our mathematical techniques and programming abilities until we are able to implement RSA from scratch. Topics covered in the course lead into the following majors: mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, and cyber security engineering. Offered by Mathematics. Limited to three attempts.Recommended Prerequisite: B or better in a calculus course.Schedule Type: Laboratory, LectureGrading: This course is graded on the Undergraduate Regular scale. 200 Level Courses

MATH 515Advanced Calculus I3

The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the arguments and techniques that are used in modern analysis, and in particular it will help the student develop a facility with the limiting processes that occur regularly throughout mathematics. In addition the course reinforces the theory of differentiation and integration learned previously and places it on a more mathematically rigorous foundation. Finally, the course provides a mathematically rigorous foundation for solving problems in more advanced applied mathematics including numerical analysis, differential equations, and functional analysis. Topics studied include: number systems, functions, sequences, limits, continuity, differentiation, integration, transcendental functions, and infinite series. Offered by Mathematics. May not be repeated for credit.Recommended Prerequisite: Math 213 or MATH 215, and MATH 300 or equivalentsRegistration Restrictions: Enrollment limited to students with a class of Advanced to Candidacy, Graduate, Junior Plus, Non-Degree or Senior Plus.

MATH 742Differential Geometry3

Riemannian geometry was created by Bernhard Riemann in his remarkable 1854 Habilitationsschrift. It provides the mathematical foundation for Einstein’s general theory of relativity. In the early 1920’s Elie Cartan generalized Riemann’s geometry to include the revolutionary program of Felix Klein understanding geometry through the lens of Sophus Lie’s theory of symmetry groups. Topics covered in this course vary, but will include: Riemannian metrics and/or their generalizations, connections, curvature, and geodesics. Offered by Mathematics.
