The goal for this course is to train students in the technical skills needed to write music for a wide variety of visual media. We will discuss the differences in scoring for narrative film, documentaries, advertising, and video games. Discussions will also revolve around scoring history, genre, and issues surrounding the collaboration of composers and visual artists. The goal for this course is to train students in the technical skills needed to work with a variety of synthesizers and samplers. Students will learn how to use different synthesizer components and techniques to manipulate audio and to create their own sounds from scratch. We will discuss different synthesis techniques such as additive, subtractive, FM, AM, wavetable, granular, and physical modeling. Discussions will also revolve around important synthesizers, types of sounds, and important pioneers in the field of synthesis and sound design.
