ENT 3500Keys to Success in Entrepreneurial Leadership3
Credit(s) 3 In today’s business environment - shaped by business model innovation, economic volatility, technological disruption, and rapidly evolving career expectations - students must demonstrate entrepreneurial mindset (creativity, innovation, proactiveness, risk taking, competitive aggressiveness, and decision making autonomy), identity-based success orientation, and leadership competencies that leverage their functional knowledge and managerial skills. Global frameworks have emphasized agility, creativity, motivation, resilience, and analytical flexibility as essential across all disciplines, and higher education leaders increasingly recognize entrepreneurial thinking and leadership as core competencies for navigating competitive job markets and designing self-directed career paths. The course addresses this need by anchoring its curriculum in Napoleon Hill’s Keys to Success, a timeless framework of 17 principles - including definiteness of purpose, positive mental attitude, applied faith, initiative, and persistence - that help students define success, align values with action, and lead with clarity. Supplemental texts such as The Power of Habit, Atomic Habits, and The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse reinforce Hill’s principles through behavioral science, identity-based habit design, and emotional intelligence, while curated Harvard Business School case studies and tailored assignments like personal statement, community impact initiative, spotlight presentations and personal reflections, foster entrepreneurial leadership, strategic decision-making, and real-world application.
Credit(s) 3 The course will specifically address the need for students to develop an “entrepreneurial mindset” that will advantageously position them to explore career opportunities including self-employment and entrepreneurship, in the rapidly expanding sports industry that was valued at $2.65 trillion in 2023. The course will provide a curated selection of the latest real-world case studies in sports technology, virtual realty, experiential entertainment, fantasy sports, information technology, online gaming, health and wellness, artificial intelligence, esports, sports analytics, digital fitness, and sustainable sports infrastructure. Students will interpret how entrepreneurs and startup companies have leveraged creativity and technological innovation in the business of sports. Students will be able to conceptualize sports ecosystems, including sports organizations and other connected stakeholders, gain insights into the resources available for self-employment and entrepreneurial careers, and develop the entrepreneurial mindset that for-profit and non-profit organizations value today. The course will offer opportunities to identify, develop, and exploit business ideas by developing value propositions, testing them, learning to pivot from them, and creating business models. Students will also have the opportunity to design a crowdfunding campaign for their venture idea.
Credit(s) 3 This course focuses on the practice of entrepreneurship.
