The primary goal of this course is to review the basic elements of jazz, and to prepare students to investigate the more rudimentary material found in the areas of jazz improvisation.
Credit(s) 0, .5, 1 The Flute Ensemble at UVA Wise is a small ensemble featuring C Flute and other members of the flute family (Piccolo, Alto Flute). Ensemble members will explore diverse musical styles from Baroque through Modern, including extended techniques like beatboxing, Jazz, and Traditional styles (Appalachian, Irish and Scottish). This chamber music experience is designed to create more small group performance opportunities for music majors, minors, AND non-majors with a high school flute background. The ensemble will meet once weekly for 90 minutes to rehearse and will present a concert each semester. Off-campus performance opportunities will be scheduled based on interest and availability of the performers.

Credit(s) 1 This course is intended for music major instrumentalists or singers who have completed MUS 1251 or have placed into it via a placement exam. Students will develop their general musicianship through the study of advanced keyboard skills. Skills in sight reading, improvisation, transposition, harmonization, interpretation, and advanced piano technique will be covered. The Division of Music Class Piano Proficiency Examination will be given as the final exam in the course and must be successfully completed in order to receive a passing grade in MUS 1252. Credit(s) 3 This course will continue the development of basic conducting techniques introduced in MUS 3520 , as well as the exploration of specific conducting techniques for choral and instrumental ensembles, as will as a general review of instrumental and choral literature. The Choral portion of the course will focus on choral development through warm-ups and breathing exercises, and will explore various examples of choral literature from the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and contemporary musical eras. The Instrumental portion will emphasize literature for wind ensembles and bands. This course is team-taught, and a course assignment calendar will be provided.
