Credit(s) 3 This course provides an introduction to the interconnections between music and culture in Latin America. It will expose students to a wide range of music from the region and have as a point of departure the study of music as a cultural and social phenomenon. Special attention will be given to the significance of music in society and in relation to central concepts such as identity, nationalism, multiculturalism, ethnicity, social structures, institutions, and cultural fields. Students will watch movies, listen to podcasts, and read about current events in order to engage in meaningful conversations with greater precision. Critical and analytical thinking will be encouraged throughout the semester. Prerequisites SPA 2020
Credit(s) 3 This course will focus on the practice of advanced writing in Spanish. In order to successfully improve their writing, students will read and analyze a variety of models (literary texts, journalistic texts. expository writing, among others). There will be a strong emphasis on writing as a process. Drafting, revising, editing, and preparing reverse outlines will be encouraged in the writing of short stories as well as expository and argumentative essays. This course will also encourage creative writing while students practice and improve their Spanish grammar and stylistic devices. Prerequisites SPA 2020 and SPA 3220
Credit(s) 3 This course represents a multidisciplinary approach to Latin American Culture. After an initial debate on the history of cultural studies, its theoretical legacies, and its current state in the Latin America field, this course will explore question of nationhood, national and ethnic identities, popular and mass culture, multicultural debates, cultural institutions, as well as gender and queer studies. This course will include photography, painting, cinema, theater, television, and literary texts. We will discuss these disciplines in the larger context of cultural production and consumption.
