OEAC 1222Wilderness First Aid and Survival3
Wilderness First Aid & Survival is a hands-on course designed to provide the student with the skills, knowledge, confidence, and ability to accomplish two primary tasks: provide a high level of care to persons who have suffered injury and/or illness in remote locations and survive a variety of emergencies in adverse wilderness conditions. You’ll learn the Patient Assessment System (PAS), how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. Case studies will be used to learn and discuss survival techniques and strategies for various environments.
Learn to travel and recreate responsibly and sustainably on our public lands. Students will learn and teach the principles of Leave No Trace and advance their minimum-impact recreation skills through science-based, hands-on learning. Students will engage in discussions around outdoor ethics and develop a deeper understanding of their ethics around land use and stewardship. In addition to the practical application of Leave No Trace skills and techniques, every student will hone their teaching style by presenting a lesson and activity on a Leave No Trace topic of their choice. This course will involve lectures/discussions followed by a weekend overnight trip.
