PEAC 1287Rock Climbing I1

This course introduces the student to the necessary equipment, safety, and skills to be able to rock climb. Two overnight trips will provide students with opportunities to use and practice the knowledge and skills they acquire. The fundamentals of rock climbing will include knot tying, belaying, belay signals, and the use of the rope as a safety line for ascending and descending rough terrain. After introduction and practice on gradual slopes, the course continues on a series of short rock faces where a variety of problems give each student a chance to climb pitches of various difficulties. All climbing is protected with an upper belay. Continuing instruction and practice are designed to acquaint each student with a variety of the special equipment associated with rock climbing and the practice using this equipment safely.

PEAC 1299Beginning Backpacking1

This course will focus on the essential skills and information that backpackers need to travel safely and comfortably in the wilderness. Topics include adjusting/loading a backpack, equipment selection, layering, setting up shelters, reading a topography map, meal planning, stove use, water purification, and leave no trace principles. This course will involve lectures/discussions followed by a weekend overnight trip.

This course will introduce beginners to the basics of hiking and fly fishing so that they can pursue future trips with more confidence. Topics will include choosing the proper equipment, minimizing the impact on the land, reading topographic maps, and basic use of maps and compasses. The techniques of fly-fishing will be emphasized and practiced. Care of equipment, safety, and determining fish behaviors will also be covered. The course will involve lecture/discussion sessions followed by a weekend trip.

PEAC 1387Indoor Rock Climbing1

This course introduces the students to climbing, bouldering, sport climbing, and climbing games in an indoor setting. Participants will gain knowledge and skills so that they may feel confident and comfortable in indoor climbing situations or gyms.
