(1.00 lec) This course will provide you with an overview of bioscience. You will explore educational and employment opportunities; job-search skills; basic concepts and techniques for effective work in entry-level positions; the scientific basis of the technologies and their historical development; and current applications in medicine, forensics, biomaterials, agriculture and environment. You will learn about national, state and local bioscience laboratories, including the basics of intellectual property law and regulatory agencies that oversee the industry, as well as explore ethical, legal, ecological, and societal issues related to bioscience. of READ 0200 or ESOL 0052.
3.00 credit (1.00 lec/2.00 lab) This course will address principles and techniques of cell culture through lecture and laboratory sessions. You will learn about the importance and applications of primary and immortalized cells and the requirements for culturing cells. You will learn about the biosafety and regulatory aspects. You will appreciate the differences between mammalian, insect cell and yeast culture processes. You will learn about the applications of cell-culture in industry and research. You will explore the current Good Tissue Practices (cGTP) regulations of Food and Drug Administration (FDA), quality control aspects, and learn about cell and tissue banks. You will gain an overview of stem cell culture and regulations. In the laboratory sessions, you will use an applications-based approach to cell culture techniques. You will learn about biosafety and clean room processes and gain hands- on experiences in aseptic techniques, mammalian and insect cell-culture processes, preparation of growth- media, and culturing of cells from frozen master cell bank. You will document your work as per regulatory standards and maintain inventories. You will learn to monitor growth conditions, harvesting and counting of cells, scale-up procedures, and cryogenics for storage of cultured vials. You will explore primary literature for adopting cell culture models for toxicology and other studies. You will learn the methods of processing cultured cells for various downstream applications. You will learn about the regulatory affairs as applied to biologics produced from cultured cells. and CHEM 2320; instructor approval to take BIOT/ CHEM 2320 concurrently.
