CREO 3025Pidgin and Creole Languages

4 hours, 4 credits Introduction to the historical development of pidgin and creole languages, as well as their linguistic properties: vocabulary, word and sentence structure, and sound patterns. Brooklyn is home to a great many communities of people who speak creole languages—Kreyòl, Patois (Patwa), Creolese, and others— contributing to the rich cultural diversity of our own student population at Brooklyn College. This course takes a close look at the social and cultural aspects of these language varieties, presented through an analysis of their underlying linguistic structure. Students will explore the debates surrounding the historical origins and structure of pidgins and creoles, and examine the role of creoles in education. Taught in English. This course is the same as LING 3025 and ENGL 3527.
