10 courses with the subject ASTR, each shown exactly as we captured it from the college's catalog, with every element we hold. Where the wording looks broken, that is our reading of the catalog, not the college's text.
ASTR 17400Solar System Astronomy (LA)3
Survey of the solar system from the earliest conceptions of motions in the sky to modern findings of space exploration in the solar system. Emphasis is placed on physical processes and dynamics of the moon, earth, planets, comets, meteoric matter, and asteroids. Astronomical instruments and measurements. (Y) Attributes: SC
Activities include both outdoor observing sessions and indoor lab exercises. Outdoor sessions emphasize learning the night sky and hands- on use of telescopes. Indoor laboratories emphasize data analysis through the use of celestial globes, spectroscopes, conputer simulation, and image processing. Prerequisites: ASTR 17400 or ASTR 17500 (either may be taken concurrently). (IRR)
Intermediate observational astronomy laboratory course in which students conduct investigations in various areas of astronomy. Emphasis is placed on the development of effective laboratory techniques, use of telescopes, computer interfacing to cameras or other astronomical tools for data acquisition, data analysis, data presentation (using computer graphical interface), and formal report writing. Prerequisites: ASTR 17400 or ASTR 17500. (IRR)
This course investigates the dynamics, energy transport, energy balance, and evolution of systems displaying a tremendously wide range of sizes, temperatures, and densities. Topics include an overview of the universe and its contents based on the latest observational data, observational techniques currently employed in astrophysical work, cosmology and the large-scale structure of the universe, the formation, evolution, and end states of stars, and a brief look at the dynamics and structure of our solar system. Prerequisites: PHYS 22400 or (ASTR 22000 and [MATH 11100 or
Calculus-based introduction to the thermal, electromagnetic, and quantum mechanical properties of celestial objects. Topics include celestial mechanics, interactions of radiation with matter, thermal radiation, formation of spectral lines, and structure, formation and evolution of stars and galaxies. Prerequisite: PHYS 21800. (S,O)
