3 courses with the subject SCI, each shown exactly as we captured it from the college's catalog, with every element we hold. Where the wording looks broken, that is our reading of the catalog, not the college's text.
SCI 110Physical Science for Elementary Teachers
Upon successful completion the student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of matter and motion and their interactions; the fundamentals of thermodynamics; the interactions between electricity and magnetism; the nature of waves, descriptions of simple atoms, and quantum mechanics; the development of chemistry from early atomic theory through the periodic table to modern theories of chemical bonding; the nature of the atmosphere and weather systems; geological processes; the nature of the universe beyond the solar system.
Saving the Biosphere investigates how the biosphere works, and how we as humans interact with the planets dynamic environment. This course will introduce you to essential environmental topics and the scientific principles that underlie them. We use case studies to understand how human populations affect natural ecosystems, and evaluate the ethical consequences of development, preservation, and other innovative ways of interacting with ecological communities. We also examine the interrelation of our air and water resources, population, soils and food supply. We look at the climatic effects of energy usage with an emphasis on patterns of human behavior. Throughout the course we highlight practical applications of environmental principles to develop an ecological worldview.
The purpose of this course is to train emerging scientists to communicate beyond academia by developing science communication skills among science majors. Students will learn to communicate about science with a variety of audiences by engaging in hands-on activities and completing oral and written assignments aimed at developing critical skills in science communication and research translation.
