The second half of the course introduces students to the fundamentals of Structured Query Language (SQL) and database design as part of a multi-step data gathering, analysis and processing effort. As part of the course, students will build web crawlers and multi-step data gathering and visualization processes.
This course, built in collaboration with Google, covers everything needed to build a website from scratch. Students will learn the core technologies which power modern websites: HTML, CSS and Javascript. Students will also build a website of their own from start to finish. By the end of this course, a student will be able to create interactive, aesthetically pleasing websites for any purpose imaginable. This online class has optional live sessions.
The student is introduced to the fundamental concepts of computer programming in an object-oriented language. The object-oriented approach is introduced using the Alice programming environment. The student then transitions to the JAVA programming language. Three hours of lecture and one two-hour laboratory weekly.
The first course in a two-semester sequence studying user experience design principles, research, and testing. In this first course, students will learn what drives product usability, the basics of User Experience design and research, and how to build wireframes and prototypes. Topics include human cognition, design thinking, evaluating designs, and accessibility and universal design principles.
Games sit at the intersection of technology, art, and culture, so success within the games industry requires you to understand all three. This course explores why we love games, what role they play in society, and the industry that produces them. Students will also learn the basics of game development. This course was developed in partnership with Unity and the International Games Developer Association to help everyone interested in the games industry start on the right foot.
The first course in a two-semester sequence studying the design and development of web applications. This course will introduce Django, a framework used for data-driven web applications to speed up development. This course also covers the fundamentals of database management skills. Students will develop their own apps in Django and use JavaScript to add animations and interactions to the sites. Basics of accessibility in app design will also be discussed.
An examination of the processes required to develop successful software and technology products. This course will explore the development of a product from ideation to launch, including customer needs, product teams and strategies, and user experiences. Students will complete multiple projects to develop and test a software product.
Generative AI is artificial intelligence that can produce new content: answers, code, music, art, video, and more. Those who harness it are more productive, more in-demand, and more highly paid. This lightly technical introductory course will teach the foundational skills to level up students’ understanding of transformers, LLMs, and more. By the end of this course, students will engineer better prompts and apply chain-of-thought techniques to generate AI solutions.
This course builds upon User Experience I and teaches students how to build effective user experiences through a rigorous process of implementing best practices, testing designs and iterating. This course will also cover topics such as branding, color palettes, user journeys, and designing for multiple platforms. To successfully complete this course, students will need to build a mobile app or website prototype and iterate upon it based on user feedback.
Content and systems designs are critical to creating a fun and enjoyable video game. The experience of a game is driven by four major components: content, systems, narrative, and user experience. This class will cover how to design all four components and build a deeper understanding of the game development process with an introduction to concepts in scripting.
This course introduces the fundamentals of Cloud Computing, Infrastructure and Networking and explores how the cloud is used in a range of situations, including IT, App Development and Machine Learning. By the end of the course you will know what the cloud is, and how to use it effectively. This course uses the Google Cloud Platform and was built in concert with the Google Cloud Learning Services team.
CSC 297Career Navigation and Exploration in Applied AI3
AI jobs are exploding, but the pathways to discover and land them aren’t always clear. This course will explore the wide - and growing - variety of career pathways that AI skills unlock. Students will understand salaries, growth trends, target jobs, and the skills needed to land them. Students will also deepen an understanding of resume and interview skills, achievable goals, and careers that meet your needs for meaning, excitement, and a lucrative financial future.
Building web applications is a core skill in today’s workforce. This class helps students combine the skills learned in previous app design and web development courses to create an app from start to finish in both an individual project and a group project setting. Students will be exposed to all facets of application development: front-end design, back-end design, and project management.
This course will teach you how to understand and use data structures. Data structures are used by almost every program and application to store, access and modify the vast quantities of data that are needed by modern software. By the end of this course students will learn what data structures are and learn how to use them in the applications built. This online course has optional live sessions.
In this course, students will learn how to analyze, interpret, and forecast complex data using AI tools through hands-on activities and practice techniques. Topics covered include regression analysis, neural networks, and time-series analysis. Students will also learn how to fill in missing data and estimate confidence in a prediction. The course culminates in a hands-on project dealing with data prediction in a real-world setting. 3 credits PREREQUSITES: CSC 229, MAT 115
