SRES 300Gender and Language3
(same as WS 300) (3 credits) This course addresses current and/or enduring issues related to the use of language (particularly as women employ and are defined by language), social responsibility, and social critical theory. WS 300 is an elective within the Women’s Studies minor and the Social Responsibility minor.
This course teaches students to challenge the status quo, question the values of the dominant culture, and change the ordinary way of thinking about social responsibility. Social critical theory asks questions that deal simultaneously with the political, cultural, and moral dimensions of life in order to empower students to contribute to liberation and justice by getting people to come out of their “culture of silence.” Some of the social critical theorists studied will represent feminist, Marxist, or religious perspectives that are often silenced or at least marginalized by society.
(repeatable) An integration of classroom theory with practical work experience under which students are employed either full or part time, with or without pay. The credits earned may vary, depending upon the internship, but no more than three credits may be counted toward the minor; additional credits can be counted as free electives. Open only to students earning a Social Responsibility minor. Social Critical Theory (SRES 301) is required before a student can request an internship in Social Responsibility. Students must secure approval from the coordinator of the Social Responsibility minor prior to engaging in an internship. (See Dr. Cadwallader)
