Students survey the teachings of the Church Fathers, the early church controversies, the development of the Catholic Church and the Medieval Church, the Reformation, the growth of denominations, the Great Awakening and modern movements toward ecumenicity.
The study of the early history of the Bible, beginning with the autographs, early versions, and the formation of the canon and including a survey of the various English versions.
Students analyze the background of various major Christian denominations. Special attention will be given to the history, leaders and doctrines of the various denominations, such as Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal and Presbyterian. 111
A consideration of the major tenets of cults such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Science, Mormonism, and Seventh-Day Adventism. Constant reference will be made to the false doctrine and illogical reasoning found in these sects so that the student will be able to give an effective refutation of their anti-Biblical doctrine.
Students investigate the various positions of Restoration leaders by reading and evaluating their writings. Special attention will be given to the nineteenth century leaders.
Students engage in an independent study of portions of the literature or environment of the Early Church, the Church Fathers, the medieval church, the Reformation, or the Restoration movement.
On the basis of the readings in CH4064, the student may choose to put into written form the results of his research. CH4065 allows the student to make an ordered presentation of his findings in Readings in Church History.
