Students will read The Odyssey in English translation and class discussion and lectures will consider its ancient context and its place within the Western literary tradition. Students will be introduced to Ancient Greek and the discipline of Classical Philology. Topics covered will include: the question of the epic's authorship, method of composition and mode of transmission, chief themes, motifs, and archetypes.
