COMM 125Media, Society, and Culture (3.0 CH) This course provides a survey of mass media and social
media to introduce students to their effects on American culture, politics, economics, and technology, as well as current and projected future media professions and career paths, technologies, employers and their corporate cultures.
COMM 150Introduction to Film (3.0 CH) This course is an introduction to the study of film as an aesthetic
cultural and historical form. Students will acquire an historical understanding of American film production and a critical perspective from which to view contemporary film. Beginning with the silent films of the early 1900's and continuing through the films of the 2000's, this course will examine Hollywood cinema as an institution; its history, genres and work as both a cultural form and an industry.
COMM 225Interpersonal Communication (3.0 CH) This course will introduce students to interpersonal
communication, specifically to the ideas and theories about how and why people communicate, and how they can improve their communication skills with one another. (P: For communication studies majors only; COMM 171).
COMM 281Media Literacy (3.0 CH) Learn analytical and critical skills that help develop awareness and
understanding of media influences in our lives, positive and negative, intentional and unintentional, including appropriate responses. (P: COMM 125). COMM 282 – Writing for Media (3.0 CH) An introduction to basic writing skills, techniques and formats for various media, especially radio, TV and online video, including news, features, commentaries, commercials and public service announcements. (P: ENG 101).
*Note: A minimum total of 3CH in BADM 455 must be completed if selected. Students are permitted to take this course for variable credit (1-12 CH) depending on the length of the internship agreement. Therefore, a summative 3CH minimum in BADM 455 is needed. 18 CH
COMM 283Introduction to Screenwriting (3.0 CH) Students study and practice the fundamentals of narrative
the art of visual storytelling, and the elements of dramatic writing for the screen. Narrative strategies for establishing structure, pacing, setting, characterization, and dialogue will be provided through model films and writing exercises.
COMM 303TV Field Production & Editing (3.0 CH) Develop programs and/or announcements and/or news or
features produced with portable field equipment. Field video equipment will also be used to film live sporting events. Students will produce, write, direct, shoot and edit TV field productions and short films. (P: COMM 282, COMM 302). 166
COMM 305Television News Production (3.0 CH) This course is a hands-on approach to the process of
developing TV news and/or feature stories and/or programs. It requires writers, producers, talent/reporters, and equipment operators. (P: COMM 302 and COMM 303)
COMM 321Organizational Communication (3.0 CH) This course examines the form and function of
communication in complex organizations including the roles that individuals and groups play in decision making, conflict management, and organizational culture. (P: COMM 171, COMM 175).
COMM 325Communication Ethics (3.0 CH) To develop students' abilities to identify issues and reflect upon
ethical dimensions of political, social and professional life, and to understand the ways in which they can exercise responsibility and practice professional civility. Examines the moral and ethical problems posed by communication practices. (P: Must have junior or senior standing).
II. Breadth in the Discipline The student is also required to select three courses from the following list. At least two of the courses must be offered outside of the Department of Communications Media. Film courses not listed below can be reviewed for approval by the department chairperson.
COMM 360Co-Curricular Practicum: The Thielensian (1.0 CH) Writing, editing, and design/graphics work (may
also include photography and/or advertising sales) on the College's student newspaper under the supervision of the student Editor-in-Chief and the faculty advisor. Two hours per week. Students may not simultaneously enroll in COMM 360, COMM 365, and COMM 371. (P: COMM 282)
COMM 371Co-Curricular Practicum: WXTC (1.0 CH) Work as a reporter, writer, commentator, editor, producer
and/or director on a newscast, interview/talk show, and/or other programming at WXTC radio, under the supervision of the station’s student general manager and faculty advisor. Two hours per week. Students may not simultaneously enroll in COMM 360, COMM 365, and COMM 371. (P: COMM 282)
COMM 455Media Law & Regulation (3.0 CH) A comprehensive study of the legal and regulatory environment in
which mass media operates in the United States. Includes First Amendment issues, government agencies, and the Supreme Court decisions affecting media and society. (P: Junior or Senior standing)
