SPAN 123Medical Spanish (3.0 CH) A beginning-level Spanish course designed for students who are pursuing
a career in a medical field. Emphasis is on developing a strong foundation in speaking, listening, reading, and writing all within the context of effective interaction and communication with Spanish-speaking patients and their families. Students will learn basic Spanish grammar and vocabulary applicable to a broad range of medical situations, to ask and respond to basic medical questions as well as appropriate protocols and cultural norms that may apply when treating people from a variety of Spanish-speaking countries. No prior knowledge of the Spanish language is necessary.
SPAN 150Intro to Spanish Communication I (3.0 CH) A beginning course designed for students with no
previous experience in Spanish. Introduces the fundamental elements of the Spanish language within a cultural context. Emphasis is on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing competencies. Taught in Spanish. SPAN 151 – Intro to Spanish Communication II (3.0 CH) This course is a continuation of SPAN 150. SPAN 305App Spanish Phonetics & Pronunciation (3.0 CH) In this course, students will broaden their
knowledge of the spoken language. Specifically, students will learn basic phonetic theory and acquire practical knowledge of the language’s basic structural and phonetic patterns (all in contrast to American English) in an effort to further improve oral proficiency and listening skills. In addition, we will examine how the spoken language varies between different countries and regions of the Spanish-speaking world. Taught in Spanish. (P: SPAN 224 or equivalent) SPAN 310 – Spain: Culture & Civilization (3.0 CH) In this course, students will gain insight into the vibrant and tumultuous history of Spanish culture and civilization from its prehistory to the present, including its varied geography, ethnically- and religiously-diverse society, deep-seeded political, regional and cultural divisions, proliferation of world-renowned art, architecture and literature as well as its unique festivals and traditions. SPAN 315Advanced Int Grammar & Culture I (3.0 CH) This course is designed for students who have already
gained intermediate high – advanced low functional proficiency with the language and want to further improve their communicative abilities as well as expand their knowledge and understanding of the richness and importance of the Spanish-speaking world. Taught in Spanish. (P: SPAN 224 or equivalent) SPAN 325 – Advanced Int Grammar & Culture II (3.0 CH) In this course, a continuation of SPAN 315, students will continue to develop and strengthen their language skills of speaking, reading, writing, listening comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, and socio-cultural competence, which are integral to developing speaking fluency. Students will learn basic Spanish grammar, practical vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions applicable to a broad range of medical situations as well as cultural patterns and issues specific to Hispanic patients in the United States.
