Extensive score study explores phrasing; relevance of instrument basics such as string techniques and bowing; woodwind, brass, and percussion technique; and idiomatic challenges. The purpose of this course is to acquire advanced conducting skills and choral techniques through an exploration of music from various historical style periods. This includes analysis of music from the conductor's perspective, discovering and solving technical challenges in choral and choral/orchestral literature, and designing rehearsals to facilitate work in various genres with the appropriate musical forces. The West Chester University Summer Wind Conducting Symposium is designed to provide musicians the opportunity to sharpen conducting skills, strengthen score study techniques, broaden knowledge of wind literature and refine rehearsal strategies. Students will conduct chamber ensembles during the morning sessions and a full wind ensemble in the afternoon.

Participants will explore areas such as program design, assessment, student leadership, rehearsal strategies, culture development, and wellness.

Students enrolled in this course will conduct a chamber concert 45-60 minutes in length that may take one of a number of forms. The concert may be presented by an ad hoc ensemble that the student has assembled from WCU students, alumni, friends, and other instrumentalists; or the ensemble may be a school, community, or church ensemble that they conduct on a regular basis. Programming should indicate a strong knowledge of wind band repertoire appropriate to the level of the ensemble.
