INS 195Music Therapy Percussion Techniques1

In this course, students will learn about non-pitched percussion, pitched percussion, the cultures, instruments, and performance practices from West Africa, Cuba, the Middle East, Brazil (pandeiros, surdos), and the Caribbean. Students will learn how to incorporate these instruments and drumming styles into their music therapy practice and develop rhythmic dictation and improvisation skills.

INS 295Guitar Class I1

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of playing the acoustic guitar. Students with little or no experience will learn the basics of rhythm, scales, and chords as applied to the performance of acoustic guitar. Music styles to be covered include folk, blues, classic rock styles, and contemporary popular tunes. Students will be encouraged to perform in solo and duet settings. Students will also be encouraged to sing as well as play the guitar for their song performances.

INS 296Guitar Class II1

Students will learn and perform intermediate guitar skills appropriate for a clinical and/or classroom setting. These guitar skills are essential for music therapy majors as they prepare to use the guitar in clinical settings including practicums and internships. Students should have a basic understanding of the guitar or have already successfully passed INS 295. INS 296 Prerequisite: Successful completion of INS 295.
