HSP 101Basic Spanish for Healthcare I3
Students who take this course will learn the basics of grammar and vocabulary covered in regular basic Spanish courses, with an emphasis on health and healthcare related topics. This is the second course in a series designed for students who want to learn Spanish with a focus on healthcare. Students who take this class will learn the basics of grammar and vocabulary covered in regular basic Spanish courses at this level, with an emphasis on health and healthcare related topics. Completion of the four courses in the series will develop a deeper knowledge of the language with this disciplinary focus. This is the fourth and last course in a series designed for students who want to learn Spanish with a focus on healthcare. Students who take this class will continue to learn the grammar and vocabulary covered in regular intermediate Spanish courses, with an emphasis on health and healthcare related topics. This class will emphasize the expansion of students’ vocabulary and the consolidation of grammar structures studied in previous classes, while practicing with the language’s different grammatical moods. HSP 339Advanced Spanish for Healthcare Professionals3
This course will prepare students with medical and other discipline-specific terminology and interview materials in Spanish, that will facilitate communication with patients, clients, students, and their family members. Its main objective is to promote culturally relevant communication with Spanish speaking patients, caretakers, and even other healthcare professionals. This course will review cultural commonalities in how Hispanic people and institutions approach healthcare in Spanish America and the US, as well as regional particularities. We will also discuss approaches to healthcare across the region. At the end of the term, students will be prepared to understand how different populations may relate and understand their access to health. Students will work in an interdisciplinary fashion, working on integrating class materials with their own personal or professional interests. HSP 381 Prerequisite: Successful completion of HSP 339.
The Health Humanities explore human health and illness with a focus on literature, performance, and art in all its forms. Throughout this course, we will review and critically analyze materials representative of Hispanic cultures centered on topics of health, illness, and disability, from the perspective of people receiving treatment or who may need it, providers, and caretakers. In the process, students will continue to develop their critical thinking and linguistic skills in the Spanish language related to Hispanic peoples, improve their knowledge of Hispanic cultures, and improve their understanding, overall, of the connections between the
HSP 450Integrating Spanish in Healthcare Within an Interdisciplinary Framework3
This course will ask students to integrate, following an interdisciplinary research process, their work in Spanish courses and their health-related concentration, other minors, and general education coursework. Students will work on an interdisciplinary healthcare-related research project and other projects aimed at improving their interviewing skills from a Health Humanities perspective. Students will work in preparing for life after school, including workshops on how to work out their resume, prepare for grad school, or find a job. HSP 450 Prerequisite: Successful completion of HSP 381. (*Note: HSP 101, HSP 102, HSP 201, and HSP 202 are equivalent to SPA 101, SPA 102, SPA 201, and SPA 202 and can be used to fulll WCU's foreign language requirement.)
