ESS 330LIntroduction to Oceanography Lab

Laboratory studies of the science of the oceans, emphasizing the interconnected physical, chemical, biological, and geological processes that shape the marine environment. The course begins with Earth’s formation and the origin of the oceans, then explores the major s subfields of oceanography: marine geology (seafloor features and marine sediments), physical oceanography (circulation, waves, and tides), chemical oceanography (seawater composition and interactions), and marine biology (marine life and ecosystems). Special attention will be given to contemporary issues such as climate change, ocean sustainability, and human impacts on the marine system. While oceanography is a highly interdisciplinary and quantitative science, students will engage with these concepts through guided in-class activities and practical exercises designed to strengthen quantitative reasoning, problem-solving skills, and collaborative learning. This course, typically taken the semester before graduation, provides students dedicated time (~5 hours/week) to focus on a research project with an assigned faculty member, who will serve as a research advisor. By the end of the semester, students must construct and submit a ~15-20 page research manuscript and ~15-30 min oral presentation. These products will then be showcased to a 3-person graduate committee as part of the required final project for the M.S. Geoscience degree. Throughout the semester, the student is expected to communicate regularly to his/her research advisor, provide task updates and receive guidance. Repeatable for credit. 2026-2027 CATALOG - GRADUATE
