SPED 322CASE MANAGEMENT IN SPECIAL EDUCATION

Either semester 2 hours This course equips pre-service special educators with the essential skills to serve competently as case managers in special education. Topics cover assessment and diagnosis of exceptional learners, writing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and conducting consensus-based IEP meetings. SPED 325BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION & MANAGEMENT

Either semester 3 hours This course provides an in-depth exploration of behavior interventions within a three-tiered system of prevention, encompassing primary, secondary, and tertiary plans. Students learn to implement school-wide procedures for primary prevention, as well as targeted group support plans for secondary and tertiary levels. Emphasis is placed on supporting students requiring intensive individualized support, including conducting functional behavioral assessments and implementing behavior modification projects. Students gain familiarity with various assessment instruments and learn approaches to classroom management, including applied behavioral analysis techniques. 15 hours of field experience required. Prerequisites: EDUC 119 & EDUC 324.

SPED 332GIFTED AND TALENTED LEARNERS

Either semester 3 hours This course equips program candidates with the knowledge needed to recognize and understand the characteristics of gifted and talented students, providing instructional recommendations to general education teachers, and designing programming and curriculum aligned with state standards. Emphasis is placed on grasping current legislation pertinent to the development of gifted learners. Topics covered include the characteristics and special needs of gifted individuals, identification procedures, educational provisions, and career development, with a focus on fostering supportive learning environments within both school and community settings. 15 hours of field experience required.
