This course is based on the work of Dave Evans and Bill Burnett and is designed for students grappling with the question, “What do I want to do when I grow up?” Using design thinking principles, students will work to develop a “better life.” Through a series of exercises, discussion, small group interactions and readings, learn to employ design thinking principles to design the life you love. Whether you are starting a career, changing your career, or looking to create your encore career, this course is for you.
This course provides students with the opportunity to practice fundamental intellectual skills for approaching problems and evaluating evidence in order to develop solutions and draw informed conclusions.
This course teaches students what digital transformation in business is and how to develop a digital strategy for an organization. Students will learn the changes, positive and negative, that digital transformation is causing in business and how companies are handling the challenges and opportunities. Learners will examine the impact of digital transformation on customers, markets, business models, value propositions, and how to leverage data, AI/ML, blockchain, automation, intelligent workflows and the cloud strategically and tactically. Throughout the course students will apply their learnings to the actual design and development of a digital strategy playbook for an organization, one they work for or one they want to use as a case study. Topics covered will include defining digital transformation, digital transformation strategy in business, digital technologies, innovation, customer engagement, value proposition for the organization, marketplace competitiveness, talent competencies for digital roles, digital roles in various types of organizations, data, AI/ML, blockchain, automation.
Throughout this course, learners will explore best practices in business writing from the most appropriate way to communicate a message to the various tools used to communicate. Business standards in written, oral and presentation skills will be explored, with opportunities to practice and create proficiency.
This course equips students with the essential skills and strategies for delivering effective business presentations. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks 49 and practical, hands-on exercises, students will learn how to design, develop, and deliver compelling presentations tailored to diverse audiences in professional settings. Key topics include audience analysis, visual design principles, storytelling techniques, and the use of technology in presentations. By the end of the course, students will be able to create persuasive presentations that effectively communicate ideas and influence decision-making within a business context. 4 credits
This course teaches students the role of data analysis in business decisions. Students will identify questions that can be answered leveraging data analysis. In addition, students will evaluate frameworks to ensure analyses are structured to inform decision making. During the course, students will classify analysis types and, in class discussion and assignments, apply the methods to answer business questions. Students will have the opportunity to bring forward examples from their workplace or recent readings to recommend and assess approaches for solving a business problem. Students will produce and deliver brief presentations of analyses and evaluate each other on the effectiveness to facilitate business decisions. Topics covered include: framing business questions; quantitative and qualitative analyses; the competitive advantage of data analysis for business management; challenges to business leaders using data analysis; and decision driven analytics. Fulfills Scientific Process general education requirement.
This hands-on, experiential based course enables the learner to identify and develop a creative project using design thinking methods of establishing desirability, feasibility and viability of a solution for a customer. Through projects, case studies, and exercises, learners will build knowledge of this human-centered approach to innovation, with an opportunity to apply the design thinking methodology to a real problem. Learners will keep an ideation sketch book/journal to capture ideas, record progress and curate information that informs the design process and their solutions.
