This course will cover the current DSM psychiatric system, and specifically the characteristics, etiology, and contributing factors of specific diagnoses. Students will learn how to arrive at a differential diagnosis. The course will address evidence-based interventions for these diagnoses. In this course students will explore multicultural social work theory, research and treatment modalities for all levels of practice. Students will learn how to develop their knowledge, awareness and skills for working with diverse clientele. This course utilizes a healing-centered macro social work lens to look more closely into the reality of those experiencing homelessness. In addition to exploring lived experience through case study, this course will also examine the theories often used when working with this population, the approaches best able to assist them, and how the macro lens can inform the micro work and how the micro experience can inform the macro perspective. This course will include a comprehensive review of historical efforts to address homelessness in the United States, current policy and practice initiatives, and the role of social workers, counselors, and other helping professionals within efforts to end the epidemic.
