Students will be introduced to creative and humanistic approaches, including personal narrative, and the practice of empathy and validation, for self-care and caring for others. 22.5 hours 100 level undergraduate course This course will introduce students to the field of creative arts therapy including: Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Poetry Therapy. Course work will include a foundational overview of the creative arts therapies, and a sampling of creative and therapeutic approaches for diverse populations. Creative arts therapists from each modality and who work within diverse communities will be invited to present to the class and share their areas of expertise and their own creative processes. Prerequisites WRIT*101 or WRIT*101E This course is not repeatable for credit. This course can fulfill a critical studies elective or general elective requirement.
CAT 201Creative Arts Therapy Approaches with Diverse Populations3
45 hours 200 level undergraduate course In this course, students deepen their knowledge of various approaches and techniques creative arts therapists use to connect with diverse populations in the community, including in trauma-informed settings. Modules in Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Dance/Movement Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Poetry Therapy are presented by specialists in the field. Students are given the opportunity to practice these techniques in collaboration with their classmates, while exploring how their own creative processes may enhance a therapeutic exchange, mind-body connection, and overall wellness. Prerequisites CAT*101 and CAT*102 Priority enrollment for Creative Arts Therapy minor students. This course is not repeatable for credit. This course can fulfill a critical studies elective or general elective requirement.
CAT 301Creative Arts Community-Based Observation and Engagement3
45 hours 300 level undergraduate course This course will offer the opportunity for students to apply their foundational creative arts therapy knowledge and integrate their creative-expressive skills while engaging in community-based observation. Students will take guided field trips and have exposure to area communities with diverse populations and creative arts therapy on-site, as well as in-classroom case study and collaborative processing. Prerequisites CAT*201 Open to Creative Arts Therapy minor students only. This course is not repeatable for credit. This course can fulfill a critical studies elective or general elective requirement.
