3 Lecture Hours Description In this course, students explore fundamental legal research techniques. Students review the primary sources of law, particularly cases and statutory law, and secondary law through indexes, digests, encyclopedias, treatises, annotated reports, restatements and law reviews. The course covers the West Key Number system and teaches Shephard’s citations. Students also learn to perform cite and proof checking of legal citations in briefs and other documents. 3 Lecture Hours Description This course provides an introduction to the civil litigation process from initiation of a lawsuit through the discovery process. Key differences between civil and criminal proceedings are examined. Students develop a working knowledge of jurisdictional rules, pleadings, discovery procedures, and pre-trial motions. Emphasis is placed on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Evidence and the paralegal’s role in assisting litigators with case development, evidence organization and document management throughout the various stages of litigation in both state and federal courts. 3 Lecture Hours Description This course provides students an introduction to estates and trusts, including lifetime trusts established during a person’s lifetime as well as trusts and estates set up upon death. Students examine concepts relating to property, wills, estate planning and administration. Students engage in the probate process and estate administration learning the fundamentals of practice in the probate court and gain an overview of the Uniform Probate Laws.
