GOBL 150CROSS-CULTURAL TRAINING FOR STUDY ABROAD. This course
prepares students to thrive in cultures other than their own. It is intended for students who are about to study abroad. It is designed to help students understand the general character of the cross-cultural experience and to explore learning and coping strategies when outside one’s native cultural environment. Topics include cultural values and assumptions, intercultural communication, and cross-cultural problems and adjustment. One hour.
GOBL 300INTERNATIONAL MANNERS AND MORES. This course equips students
to recognize and appreciate cultural differences, their origins, and how they manifest in a variety of contexts. By exploring other customs and ways of thinking, this course prepares students to engage respectfully and effectively on the international stage. Of special value for students of any major who plan to work, study, and/or travel abroad, yet the principles studied and skills gained apply just as readily to interacting with any community or institution with a particular way of doing things. Offered periodically, three hours.
GOBL 301GLOBAL FRANCE: HISTORY, LITERATURE, AND FILM. Today
French is spoken in over 29 countries. Additionally, France is home to significant sub- Saharan African and Maghrebi diasporas, and France has the largest Islamic population of Western Europe. Through literature (i.e. Mouloud Feraoun, The Poor Man’s Son; Gisèle Pineau, Exile: According to Julia), film (i.e. Days of Glory, The Battle of Algiers, La Haine, Timbuktu), and historical texts, this class will examine France from a transnational perspective, focusing on French presence abroad (from the lens of political, military, and economic interests), perspectives on that presence, and waves of immigration from former colonies to metropolitan France. We will also consider historical and contemporary debates about French laïcité (secularism) in relation to religious (Jewish, Islamic, Protestant, and Catholic) communities. Taught in English. students to the field of Translation Studies through the analysis of the use of subtitles, translations, and adaptations for films, television series, music, and literature. Students will
GOBL 310LATINO AND LATIN AMERICAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE. A
survey covering representative Latin American and U.S. Latino cultural production with an emphasis upon the study of Hispanic perspectives and the integration of Christian thought. Taught in English. Offered periodically, three hours.

Applied Music (8 hours): Students must complete a minimum of eight (8) credits in their primary applied instrument. Students must take an applied lesson in their primary area every semester they are enrolled at the college.
