WRIT 101FOUNDATIONS OF ACADEMIC DISCOURSE. A course introducing

students to the fundamentals of college composition. Topics include the writing process, rhetorical strategies, basics of critical reading and thinking, and key forms of writing such as informative, evaluative, argumentative, and synthesis. This course serves as a foundation to prepare students to succeed in other academic writing contexts. This course is designated Writing Intensive (WI) and Information Literacy (IL). Three hours.

WRIT 120TUTORING STUDENT WRITERS. This course provides theoretical and

practical training in one-on-one writing instruction for students working as peer tutors in the Writing Center. The primary goal is to support and complement their work; the secondary goal to prepare them for future professional or academic roles. Reserved for writing tutors only. One hour.

Coursework will include case studies, job search materials, set of instructions, standard professional correspondence, examination of social media in professional settings, oral presentation with presentation software, and research into a technical field with the goal of communicating that field to non-experts. WRIT 320PROFESSIONAL EDITING. This course provides an overview of key

concepts and skills essential for the professional editor. It will cover standard proofreading marks, the creation and use of style guides, communication with authors and publishers, best practices in freelance editing, and feedback tools in Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat. Students will gain competency in editing both fiction and non-fiction prose as proofreaders, copyeditors, content editors, and developmental editors. Prerequisite: Writing 101. WRIT 352SCIENCE WRITING AND REPORTING. This course prepares students to

interpret stories in natural, technical, and social sciences for various public audiences through multiple forms of media. It helps students assess how to develop a story for public consumption out of academic publications through creative work, research, and other journalistic techniques. Coursework includes analysis of published scientific articles and science writing and original short and long-form stories for various purposes. Alternate years, three hours.

WRIT 356GENRE FICTION. This course will explore cultural conceptions of “literary

fiction” and “genre fiction” through: (a)., reading accessible scholarly commentary that will help to historicize these terms (b)., reading works that helped give rise to several contemporary genres alongside contemporary works that “play” with these genres, and (c)., writing and workshopping short fiction inspired by course readings. WRIT 384PLAYWRITING. This course emphasizes the various aspects of writing an

effective play. Topics include the processes of drafting and revision, analyses of literary style and technique, and methods of offering and accepting constructive criticism. Additionally, the collaborative nature of playwriting will be addressed; a play is not complete until the writer has involved others in the creative process. The student is expected to submit original manuscripts during the semester. Students may only receive credit for one of Theatre 384 or Writing 384. Offered periodically, three hours.

WRIT 451ADVANCED MANUSCRIPT DEVELOPMENT. This course serves as an

advanced seminar for the creative writing minor, giving students the opportunity to develop work already begun, with guidance toward professional or academic submission. Students must come into the class with a substantial project of poetry, novel, memoir, essays, or short stories in progress; a minimum page count requirement will be specified by the instructor at the time of registration. We will read and critique each other’s manuscripts, produce additional pages over the course of the semester, and read short works on craft. Students will work toward a substantial final project: a prose or poetry manuscript accompanied by either a query letter addressed to literary agencies or a portfolio of the student’s best prose or poetry accompanied by a statement of purpose. Prerequisite: students must have taken at least one 300-level creative writing course unless granted permission by the instructor. Offered periodically, three hours.
