This elective will provide an opportunity for 4th year students interested in surgical careers the opportunity to experience night time surgical patient care. Many surgical residencies have a night-float system to remain within work hour limits, and this course will prepare our students to comfortably operate in these systems. Focus will be on performing effective patient care hand-offs and transitions, learning to triage and manage phone calls while covering multiple surgical services, and providing general surgical consultative services as appropriate. Students will mostly operate at the sub-intern level caring for patients on the hospital floors. Students may participate in operative surgical procedures as able, and provide ED and floor consultative services when possible.

This clinical elective provides students with an opportunity to participate in the Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery clinical program. Students will see and provide multidisciplinary care for a high volume of patients seeking surgical treatment for their morbid obesity. Our multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, physician-extenders, dietitians, psychologists, nurses, and others, providing care to patients in the same outpatient setting. Students will also provide care to a spectrum of patients requiring emergent and elective general surgery. Surgical procedures will be primarily focused on minimal access surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. In support of the educational focus, we utilize multiple venues (outpatient clinic, operating room, and inpatient surgical units) to help students hone their skills in all areas of surgical practice.
