HUMA 1775Monsters of Modernity3

What can vampires, zombies, and other strange beasts tell us about the cultures that create them and about ourselves? This course uses monsters as a framework to examine cultural values, fears, and social tensions from the early nineteenth century to the present, focusing on technological, scientific, environmental, economic, and social change. Drawing on examples from Europe, America, and East Asia, we will explore how monsters depicted in art, literature, film, and other media challenge and reinforce ideas about what it means to be human. 3C/3/0/0
