A maximum of 30 percent of credits counted toward a master’s degree at Syracuse University may be transferred from another institution provided that the credits are an integral part of the degree program. Transfer credit can comprise no more than 50 percent of the doctoral coursework. This rule does not apply to dual degree programs and to degree programs that are offered jointly with another university. A maximum of three credits from a combination of transfer and/or external examinations/extra-institutional and experiential learning may be accepted toward C.A.S. programs, with program approval. School of Education C.A.S. programs that are 60 or more credits may have a maximum of 30 credits transferred. | 8.2 Transfer Credit | transfer_credit | 8.2 Transfer Credit In compliance with NYSED regulations, Syracuse University only awards transfer credit for courses that are an integral part of a Syracuse University degree program, as determined by the appropriate Syracuse University academic unit. Generally, schools/colleges may consider accepting transfer credit from: institutions recognized by regional accrediting commissions national accrediting bodies professional organizations that accredit free-standing professional schools and programs within multipurpose institutions 1 institutions that are recognized candidates for accreditation recognized foreign tertiary-level institutions, chartered, and authorized by their national governments, generally through the Ministry of Education a formal transfer articulation agreement 1 For students enrolled in an accredited program at a non-accredited institution, only courses within the discipline that is accredited will be considered for transfer credit. General education and other courses from the institution will not be considered. Syracuse University grants transfer credit from official transcripts based on course content, the quality of the student’s performance, and applicability to the program. Transfer credit is evaluated only for the degree or certificate program to which the student is admitted and will be re-evaluated and may change if the student moves into a different Syracuse University program. A re-evaluation of transfer credit may also affect the student’s financial aid, especially if the student’s class standing alters. If all of the student’s previous work is not accepted for transfer, the student may enter Syracuse University at a different class level than the student had attained at their prior institution. A maximum of 90 credits of transfer credit or a combination of transfer credit and any other credit (e.g., AP exams, experiential learning) will be accepted. Transfer credit will not be granted for undergraduate students taking courses abroad during the academic year while on a leave of absence. Students with interest in non Syracuse University abroad programs should reach out to Syracuse Abroad to explore their options. If a student plans to take courses at another institution that will transfer back into their Syracuse University degree, the student must obtain home school/college approval before enrolling. If a student takes courses at a two-year college before junior standing, the student may take approved coursework during a summer session or while on leave of absence. After attaining junior standing, the only courses that will be approved will be those that fulfill lower-division requirements or free electives; a maximum of 66 credits from a combination of credit from a two-year college and any other credit (e.g., AP exams, experiential learning) will be accepted. | 2025-2026 | coursecatalog.syracuse.edu |

Once matriculated, decisions about transfer of specific courses, as well as decisions about whether any course may be used to waive a required course, are made by the student’s advisor in consultation with appropriate faculty. | Transfer Credit | transfer_credit | Transfer Credit Transfer of credit is considered only for courses that may be applied to the program in which the student is interested. In the School of Art , School of Design , Department of Drama , Department of Film and Media Arts , and the Setnor School of Music , transfer students often have an excess of credits in academic subjects that cannot be applied to a specific program due to the high number of studio credits required. The result may be that the period of undergraduate study is extended beyond the typical four years. In the Setnor School of Music , placement examinations in music theory and applied music are also required before credit is accepted. In all cases, transfer credit is evaluated after admission specifically for the degree program to which the student is admitted and may change if the student moves into a different program. Credits - not grades or honor points - are transferred from other institutions. Only credits earned at Syracuse University are counted in the grade point average. If the student subsequently takes a course at SU for which he/she had previously received transfer credit, the transfer credit will be removed, as courses completed at SU take precedent. This includes credits transferred for academic or studio electives. Fees All students matriculated in a VPA major or minor are charged a program fee each semester that covers certain expenses such as applied music instruction, specialized studio art supplies, dramatic productions, visiting artists, and equipment and technology. Non-VPA students are charged an applied music fee for private instruction and a per credit fee for other VPA courses. See the SU Tuition, | 2025-2026 | coursecatalog.syracuse.edu |

Newhouse School of Public Communications offers programs of study that lead to the B.S. degree. Students enrolled in the dual program with the College of Arts and Sciences are granted either the B.A. or B.S degree appropriate to the arts and sciences program of study. Students enrolled in the dual program with the School of Management or with the School of Information Studies also earn the B.S. degree. Dual programs are available to all majors except the Bandier Program in Recording and Entertainment Industries, and the Esports Communications & Management program, which is already a cross-disciplinary program. Professional coursework in communications may be taken in advertising; journalism; public relations; recording and entertainment industries; sports media; television, radio and film, and visual communications. All the programs stress broad scholarship to ensure that students attain the background necessary for serving in leadership roles in public communications. All work prepared for classes in the school must be written electronically. Students are encouraged to bring a computer to campus for use in word processing, e-mail, web searches, and graphic, multimedia, video, and photographic production and presentations. Public communications students at Syracuse University, as at all accredited schools of public communications, receive a balanced education in completing their degree requirements, devoting more than two-thirds of their study to areas other than communications, and earning a minimum of 61 credits in the liberal arts and sciences. Dual Enrollment Graduation Requirements Students dually enrolled in the Newhouse School of Public Communications and another school or college within the University must fulfill the degree requirements of both schools. Upon graduating, they receive a bachelor’s degree (one diploma) conferred jointly by the two schools. Formal dual programs of study are available in cooperation with the College of Arts and Sciences , the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs , the School of Information Studies , and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management . These programs are available to all Newhouse majors except for the Bandier Program in Recording and Entertainment Industries and Esports Communications & Management since these majors are already cross-disciplinary in nature and require courses from multiple colleges. Admission to Major Programs Students must declare a major program of study before the end of the sophomore year. Students majoring in visual communications may need a minimum of five semesters on Main Campus to complete the major; other majors require a minimum of four semesters on Main Campus. Admission to the creative track in advertising is based upon a student receiving a grade of B+ or better in ADV 202 Portfolio I and upon a positive committee review of a portfolio. Students are admitted to the Bandier Program in Recording and Entertainment Industries and the Esports Communications & Management program through the first-year application for admission to the University. Entry into the major in Recording and Entertainment Industries and the Esports Communications & Management program after a student has enrolled in the University in a different major is dependent upon available seats. Intra-University Transfer Students may apply for internal transfer into all majors in the Newhouse School. However, acceptance as an internal transfer does not guarantee access to limited enrollment programs (i.e., Bandier, Esports). Admission is based upon cumulative GPA, rigor of academic coursework taken at Syracuse University, engagement on and off campus, a writing sample and performance in two required courses. To transfer into the School of Public Communications from another school or college of the University, the student must: Complete a minimum of 30 graded (not P/F) credits at SU before they are eligible for internal transfer; Have earned a “B” or better in COM 107 Communications and Society (open to all students in the spring semester) and an approved writing course WRT 105 Studio 1: Practices of Academic Writing ; WRT 109 Studio 1: Practices of Academic Writing (Honors) ; ENL 211 Composition for Non-native Speakers of English ; ENL 213 Advanced Academic Writing and Research for Non-native Speakers of English , or An equivalent course, with a “B” grade.
