CVEN 2430Engineering Geology3
This course introduces geological science topics with applications in engineering, focusing on the characterization of mineral deposits, physical geology, and the identification and properties of minerals and rocks. Topics include the fundamentals of structural geology, site investigations, and the engineering implications of geologic hazards.
CVEN 3000Introduction to Environmental Engineering3
Understanding of various measures used to identify pollution levels in the environment. Study of population growth and its impacts on environmental sustainability. Methods to recognize, analyze and solve environmental problems related to air, water and soil.
Introduction of hydraulic engineering in closed conduit (pipe) flow, open channel flow, and pump systems. Introduction of hydrologic engineering processes such as precipitation, evaporation, infiltration, runoff, hydrograph analysis, methods to estimate peak flows, design of drainage systems, urban storm water management, and flood control devices.
CVEN 3380Construction Safety and Environment Management3
This course focuses on the principles and practices of safety within the construction industry. This course introduces OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as construction safety and health principles. Students will gain an understanding of the regulations, best practices, and risk management strategies necessary to create a safe working environment on construction sites. The course will cover hazard identification, safety planning, safety regulations, and emergency response.
This course provides an in-depth study of rock mechanics principles, including rock properties, stress and strain analysis, rock failure mechanisms, and the impact of explosives and fragmentation. The course also covers ground control methods used in tunneling, mining, and construction. Students will use specialized software for rock mechanics analysis and participate in laboratory experiments to measure rock properties, simulate rock fragmentation, and apply ground control techniques. The Rock Mechanics Lab complements the lectures, providing hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and ROCSCIENCE and PLAXIS 3D software tools.
CVEN 3480Introduction to Virtual Design and Construction3
Study of the state-of-the-art principles, practices, and techniques related to Virtual Design and Construction (VDC). Both building and heavy construction projects are addressed. Students use 3D BIM models and other VDC technology to digitally plan out all aspects of a construction project, from estimating costs to scheduling and risk management
CVEN/AREN 4490 An introduction of critical path method techniques, planning, logic, baseline scheduling and updating, diagramming and analysis of project schedules.
Principles and procedures for the design of small hydraulic structures including flow measurement structures such as flumes, flow regulation structures such as locks, and discharge structures such as spillways. Computer applications in hydraulic design.
Application of hydrologic principles to the design of urban drainage structures including storm sewers, culverts, detention basins and other minor structures; computer applications in hydrological design.
This course explores the legal principles and regulations that govern the construction industry. It covers various aspects of construction law, including contract formation, construction disputes, project management, and relevant regulations. Students will gain an understanding of the legal framework that underpins construction projects and develop the skills to analyze and navigate legal issues in the industry. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and ethical reasoning needed for a successful career in construction.
An introduction of principles, practices, and techniques related to construction cost estimating including quantity takeoff, pricing of materials, classification of work, labor, overhead, specifications, contracts, and bidding procedures for residential and light commercial applications.
Junior standing and consent of instructor. CIP 14.0401
CVEN 4470Construction Project Management3
Refers to the process of managing a team of design and construction professionals for the purpose of delivering construction and engineering services to a client. This means performing this service so as to deliver the project within budget and schedule constraints, while maintaining the prescribed level of quality and safety defined for the project. This course intends to increase student’s technical knowledge of advanced project management concepts, but also will strive to assist them in taking a proactive leadership role in identifying and improving value in planning, design, construction and post construction stages of a project and/or program.
