Students will become familiar with the High Leverage Practices (HLPs) for assessment identified by the Council for Exceptional Children, including: (a) using multiple sources of information to develop a comprehensive understanding of a student’s strengths and needs, (b) interpreting and communicating assessment information with stakeholders to collaboratively design and implement educational programs, and (c) using assessment data to analyze instructional practices and make adjustments that improve student outcomes. Field-based experiences provide opportunities to practice observation, data collection, interpretation, and collaboration skills. This course explores a variety of educational and theoretical teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners with different abilities. Students will learn how to implement multi-factored assessments, write Educational Team Reports (ETRs), and identify individual learning needs. The course offers an in-depth examination of the processes involved in developing and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), differentiating curriculum, applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and designing targeted interventions to support students in inclusive, self-contained, and resource settings. Field study experiences provide opportunities to apply course concepts in real-world settings. The goal of this course is to prepare teacher candidates to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to build and sustain meaningful inclusive partnerships with families, colleagues, and school communities - especially in support of students with diverse learning needs. Candidates will learn to collaborate effectively with mentor teachers and school personnel; engage families in supporting student learning; participate in professional learning communities; and demonstrate leadership, reflection, and ethical practice. Candidates will gain a working understanding of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504, including how to engage families as active participants in the development, implementation, and review of these plans. Through integrated coursework and concurrent clinical experiences, candidates will apply research-based strategies, professional standards, and collaborative practices to promote every learner’s academic, social, and emotional growth.
