Clinical Dental Hygiene Lecture - Special Needs A continuation of DHYG 1010 lecture, including dental hygiene care for patients with special needs and first aid procedures.
(Formerly DH 102C) Supervised application of the practice of dental hygiene on patients within the clincal setting. Taken concurrently with DHYG 1020 . (SL)
(Formerly DH 103) Lecture, group, and individually supervised practice covering x-ray production, radiation hygiene, exposing, developing, mounting, reading and interpretation of intra-oral radiographs. Taken concurrently with DHYG 1024 .
(Formerly DH 104) Study of characteristics and techniques of the manipulation of materials used in dentistry. Emphasis is placed on basic knowledge for selecting materials. Laboratory experiences supplement lectures.
This course will encompass the tooth morphology of individual teeth & gross anatomy of supporting tissue structures, coupled with an introduction to histology and embryology of oral tissues surrounding the teeth. Emphasis will be placed on clinical considerations of orofacial development and anatomy relevant to dental hygiene assessment and provision of care. The laboratory portion of the course includes manikin/anatomically correct models and student-partner experiences. Taken concurrently with prescribed courses of the first semester, first-year curriculum.
(Formerly DH 113C). This course is designed to be a continuation of freshman clinical experiences through application of the practice of dental hygiene on patients within the clinical setting and provides a bridge to the sophomore year.
The structure and functional aspects of head and neck and their significance to the practice of dental hygiene. Taken as designated in the first-year curriculum.

DHYG 1200Anxiety and Pain Control3
This reading-intensive course is an introduction to the principles of local anesthesia including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, armamentarium, injections, complications, nitrous oxide analgesia administration, neurophysiologic considerations, and laboratory application of techniques. The lecture will be hybrid using asynchronous micro-lectures via eLearn. Active learning activities will take place in each class session in person. Laboratory practice will be in-person, on-campus in a clinic setting supervised by Tennessee licensed registered dental hygienists.
This course studies the psychosocial, physical, and oral characteristics of patients with special needs. Emphasis is on the care and clinical management of special needs patients.
Formerly DH 201C) Supervised competency-based application of the practice of clinical dental hygiene with progression to expanded periodontics. DHYG 2010 and DHYG 2100 must be taken concurrently. (SL)
Dental Hygiene Lecture A continuation of the study of the theoretical foundation of preventive and therapeutic oral health services used in the hygiene process of care. Emphasis is placed on written communication skills, practice management, working in multicultural settings, career options and interviewing techniques, and ethical dilemmas. DHYG 2024 must be taken concurrently.
(Formerly DH 202C and 205C) A progression of the continuation of competency-based supervised applications of expanded periodontics. Clinical practice is provided in collaboration with the clinical dental hygiene faculty through an assessment of patient needs, planning for treatment, and disease control. Assessment of student progress in attaining program and clinical competency is ongoing. DHYG 2020 must be taken concurrently.
Expanded Periodontics for the Dental Hygienist Advanced instructions are offered to further enable students to recognize and label periodontal disease and to understand etiological factors. Students are taught to participate in the planning of treatment for early or minor forms of periodontal disease.
(Formerly DH 210) A study of disease and disease processes, the oral manifestations of systemic disease, oral pathology with particular attention to oral cancer and cancer detection methods.
Community Dentistry A survey of private, community, and governmental agencies. Dental epidemiology, socio-economic factors relating to dental care, special programs, and third party payment plans are covered. (SL)
