ECED 330Language and Literacy Development for Young Children with Practicum3

This course will examine the development of language and literacy skills in typically developing young children as well as those with special needs. Instructional strategies for facilitating development of listening, oral language, and early literacy skills in all children, including those from culturally, linguistically, and socio-economically diverse backgrounds, and those with language delays and disorders, will be explored. Content knowledge is combined with in-depth practical experience in a classroom serving young children. (C or better is required in all ECED courses.)

This course is a 90-hour field placement experience for senior-level students. Students will be assigned two placements: a school-based setting to implement lessons based on effective pedagogy and content learning strategies and a community-based setting to apply effective communication and collaboration skills with a variety of partners. This field placement provides opportunities for teaching, observation, and application in early childhood environments. (C or better is required in all ECED courses.)

Student teaching is a culminating 10-week application-based teaching experience. Preservice teachers will be placed in two settings for 5 weeks each.
