Preservice Teachers explore literacy-related theories, research, and methods for elementary grade levels with a particular focus on early (PK-2) literacy development and foundational literacy skills. Preservice Teachers develop their own reading and writing practices and identities as they discuss the interconnected and developmental nature of oral language, phonology, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing instruction. Preservice Teachers also administer and analyze a variety of diagnostic assessments and will design and implement literacy-based learning experiences across a variety of social and cultural contexts. This 75-hour clinical experience and corresponding seminar is designed for Teacher Candidates to engage in authentic, PK-6 elementary classroom settings and to plan, teach, and assess small and whole group lessons based on best practices in the core content areas. Faculty model and scaffold instructional practices as they coach, observe, and mentor Teacher Candidates throughout the semester. Successful completion of this course is required in order to enroll in the Teaching Internship.

This Teaching Internship experience is required for all Elementary Education and Teaching majors seeking initial licensure to teach elementary school (grades PK-6). Teaching Interns will spend 13 weeks in an elementary school setting, assuming the responsibilities of a classroom teacher. Under the direction of a Mentor Teacher and University Supervisor, Teaching Interns will design and teach engaging lessons, assess student learning, and reflect on their continued professional growth.
