MAED 151The Teaching of Middle School Mathematics3
A study of current practices in middle school mathematics teaching, designed for teacher candidates seeking 6-12 licensure. Students will develop and implement high-quality standards-based mathematics lessons. Students will actively engage in cognitively-demanding mathematical tasks and create rich tasks for middle school mathematics. Students also will learn how to facilitate mathematical discourse to assess and advance mathematical understanding. Mathematics specific tools and technology will be utilized in the learning and teaching of mathematical concepts.
MAED 152Principles of Secondary Education in Mathematics1
Students will be introduced to examples of high-quality inquiry-based lessons framed by the Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning. Students will model the pedagogical concepts to which they are being introduced by preparing and modeling a mathematics lesson.
MAED 209Numbers and Operations for Elementary and Middle School Teachers3
This course combines the study of numbers and operations with content-specific pedagogy based on current trends in mathematics education research. Students will develop an understanding of our number system and how its structure relates to operations by focusing on children’s thinking and computational strategies. Students will actively engage in a problem-solving environment through investigations and hands-on activities and manipulatives.
MAED 220Rational Numbers and Proportional Reasoning for Elementary and Middle School Teachers3
This course combines the study of rational numbers and proportional reasoning with content-specific pedagogy based on current trends in mathematics education research. Students will develop conceptual understanding of rational numbers and proportions, ways of representing numbers, and procedural fluency. Students will actively engage in a problem-solving environment through investigations and hands-on activities and manipulatives.
An in-depth observation and participation practicum taking place in the middle school. Students are placed in a public school setting (for at least 30 hours) under the supervision of Longwood. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the middle school setting and effective practices for teaching middle school mathematics.
A study of current practices in secondary mathematics with emphasis on curriculum and instructional procedures, including appropriate technology use. Includes an in-depth observation and participation practicum. Placed in public school settings for at least 30 hours under supervision of said Longwood faculty member. Taken in the sophomore year.
MAED 255Using Assessments and Differentiation in the Mathematics Classroom3
This course examines the relationships among instruction, assessment, and monitoring progress in mathematics to meet learning needs. Students will study the use and implementation of formative and summative mathematics assessments including those at the international, national, and state levels. Students will learn how to analyze assessment data to improve mathematics instruction and student achievement through the use of differentiation strategies.
MAED 310Data Science for Elementary and Middle School Teachers3
This course combines the study of data science with content-specific pedagogy based on current trends in mathematics education research. This course explores the foundations of data science grounded in algebra, probability, statistics and block programming. Students will actively engage in a problem-solving environment through investigations and hands-on activities and manipulatives.
MAED 313Geometry and Measurement for Elementary and Middle School Teachers3
This course combines the study of geometry and measurement with content-specific pedagogy based on current trends in mathematics education research. This course explores the foundations of informal/formal measurement and geometry in one, two, and three dimensions. Students will actively engage in a problem-solving environment through investigations and hands-on activities and manipulatives.
MAED 340Integrating the M in STEM for Elementary and Middle School Teachers3
This course combines the study of mathematics with science, technology, and engineering by exploring how to make interdisciplinary connections in the classroom. Students will actively engage in a problem-solving environment through investigations and hands-on activities and manipulatives.
An in-depth observation and participation practicum taking place in a high school setting. Students are placed in a public school setting (for at least 30 hours) under the supervision of Longwood. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the high school setting and effective practices for teaching high school mathematics. Students will create and teach lessons using rich tasks that actively engage mathematics students.
Students create lessons for problem-based investigations in mathematics. Students also discuss the use of classroom management to improve student learning. Includes an in-depth observation and participation practicum, supervised by a faculty member. Placed in public school settings for at least 30 hours under supervision of said Longwood faculty member. Taken in the junior year.
Students will use data science and modeling techniques to seek solutions to a wide variety of questions that require collecting organizing, representing, and using different types of data. Students will learn how to use authentic tasks and real-world data in an active learning environment to analyze complex problems. Students will develop an understanding of how data science and modeling concepts are developed in high school mathematics.
A study of current practices in high school mathematics teaching, limited to teacher candidates seeking 6-12 licensure. Through the development of a unit plan, students will investigate a variety of instructional and assessment strategies that develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving skills in alignment with state and national standards. Students will also reflect on current research in mathematics education.
