HP 210Culture & Care I: Global Health Insights This two-course series (HP-210/211) explores1

healthcare in a global context. The pre-departure course discusses healthcare delivery, access, and disparities outside the United States. It examines how culture, history and environment influence healthcare systems and practices globally. The summer term course includes travel to southern Mexico, where faculty and students from the Autonomous University of Chiapas (UNACH) will help students gain first-hand insight into this region of Mexico's communities' healthcare access, systems and cultural influences. The trip includes visits to local healthcare sites as well as culturally significant locations. Requisite: FYC-101 must be taken prior to or at the same time as HP-210. NOTE: This is a two-course series, with students earning 1 credit in the spring semester for the predeparture course, and 2 credits in the summer term for the trip to Mexico. The total fee for the experience is split between the two courses in the series, with the majority of the fee on the spring semester billing and a $250 administrative fee on the summer term billing. Students receive a thorough grounding in basic medical terminology through a study of root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to comprehend a medical record report, communicate among medical professionals, and have a high-level overview of medical terms. This course will serve as a prerequisite to medical programs such as nursing, therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, etc.
