GEOG 1050People and the Planet: Introduction to Sustainability3
Introduction to human, social, ethical, and scientific aspects of environmental sustainability, with emphasis on relationships among people, patterns of consumption and behavior, and impacts to the planet. Historical and contemporary issues and causes will be examined, and potential sustainable solutions will be discussed.
The course will explore current and sometimes controversial topics in science. Topics will vary, and will be related to the natural science discipline prefix including concepts in chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology and climate science, geography, and mathematics.
Diverse places from around the world are examined from both a regional geography perspective and through the lens of globalization. Principles of geographic study are emphasized, including physical geography, human geography, and geopolitics.

This course emphasizes the nature and distribution of natural resources in their role as support systems for humans and their activities. Historic and contemporary approaches to conservation are examined. Topics considered include energy, soil, land use, water, wildlife, forestry, and conservation ethics.
Investigation of the North America region from a geographic perspective. Settlement patterns, agriculture, manufacturing, commerce, and transportation are discussed along with the physical, political, economic, and cultural factors that characterize North American landscapes.
This course focuses on the aspects of development that ecologists/environmentalists, economists, sociologists and political scientists think should be sustained when governments and the private sector set policies for economic growth. The theory and application of sustainable development and sustainability are addressed in this course.
Students In this course will learn skills and tools necessary to observe and study the physical and biological features of local environments. Basic environmental and ecological monitoring techniques will be emphasized. A significant portion of the course will take place outdoors.
1 TO 3 This is a capstone course for students who are engaged in research with a faculty mentor in a geographic field of study. This course exposes students to the methods of both primary and library research, and includes the formulation of a research problem, literature searching and review, research design, execution, data analysis, and presentation.

Topics vary based on the interest of instructor and students. The course emphasizes critical review of literature through reading, writing, discussion, and presentation.

Each course will focus on a topic of the instructor’s choice that may include spatial patterns, human-environment interactions, & regional dynamics. Topics may integrate physical, human, economic, cultural, political, or geospatial perspectives. Emphasis placed on spatial analysis, research methods, & critical evaluation of geographic information.
1 TO 15 The Geography Internship provides practical experience with an approved agency or facility involved in activities pertaining to geographic fields of study.
